Description
Malta's prehistory is unique, which is why we suggest a guided tour of the Archaeological Museum, which will allow you to understand the prehistoric temples. However, if you're interested in another attraction or museum, we'll be happy to change the visit to suit your preferences. With 320 monuments packed into an area of just 55 hectares, Valletta is one of the most historically dense areas in the world. The first stone of Malta's capital was laid in 1566 by the Order of Saint John, following the "Great Turkish Assault". Their goal was to block access to the Grand Harbour in anticipation of another potential Turkish attack. Many more stones followed, forming the most modern city in 16th-century Europe. Its charm lay not only in its honey-coloured streets and panoramic views, but also in its lack of odor, as it was built over a sewage system, making it the dream city for European nobility. The Order of Saint John also introduced the Baroque style to the city, modernizing it and removing its previous military fortress ambiance. The buildings rose a floor and Baroque facades were added, which can still be observed today from the large entrances to the lodgings and properties of the knights. In the early 21st century, the city retains all its charm. It manages to touch the spirit of even the most experienced travellers, leaving a lasting impression. We will stroll through its streets and most emblematic points such as the Upper Barrakka Garden, with its spectacular views of the Grand Harbour, and its streets, which show palaces from different eras, the hostels of the languages that made up the Order, countless churches... every step in the only European capital that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk through centuries of history in this city built "by gentlemen for gentlemen". And behind the sober facade of the co-cathedral of Saint John is one of the most impressive cathedrals that travellers can find worldwide. Opened in 1572, shortly after the great Turkish assault, the first intention was to build a convent church for the new city of the order, exclusively for its knights, and due to the situation at the time (a new Turkish attack was feared at any moment) a building in line with the times was constructed: sober, military and resistant. But with the passage of time and changing circumstances, the building also changed: with the arrival of the Baroque style the building was decorated to the point that today it is considered one of the greatest exponents of this style. An extravaganza of colour that goes from the floor (which has been described as "the most beautiful floor in the world") full of intricately worked marble tombs, to the ceiling decorated by Mattia Preti, passing through each and every one of the chapels of the different languages of the order. And as a culmination of this unique building, two Caravaggios: "Saint Jerome Writing" and the artist's masterpiece, "The Beheading of Saint John". We will visit the Malta Archaeological Museum, where we will find all the artefacts found in the megalithic prehistoric temples, which will help us better understand this unique civilization in the world that seems, in many respects, to have advanced centuries (and even millennia) ahead of the rest of humanity.
